What might I have accomplished in the physical world if I had received this blessed opportunity for enlightenment back then? That handful of mortals under the rays of the moon seemed like a gathering of privileged beings favored by heavenly deities. The millions of men and women sleeping in nearby cities, shackled to their immediate interests and eager to exchange the vilest sensations, wouldn’t have the least suspicion of that unprecedented gathering of candidates seeking the inner light, who had been summoned to work hard at preparing for more lasting and effective incursions into higher spirituality. Did they have any idea of the sublime opportunity that was welcoming them? Would they take advantage of that gift with enough understanding of eternal values?
Sometimes, when asleep, or half-asleep, we have ideas which seem to us to be excellent, but which, despite all the efforts we make to recall them, are effaced from our memory on waking – whence come these ideas?
They are the result of the freedom of the spirit, who emancipates himself from the body and enjoys the use of other faculties during this moment of liberty, and they are often counsels given by other spirits.
What are the use of such ideas and counsels, since we lose the remembrance of them, and cannot profit by them?
Those ideas often belong rather to the world of spirits than to corporal world; but, in general, though the body forgets them, the spirit remembers them, and the idea recurs to him at the proper time, in his waking state, as though it were an inspiration of the moment.
